Mr.Brand Conscious....

‘Brand’dish folks…

At the outset let me clarify that this post doesn’t intend to raise a finger at any one. It has been just my observation how people’s choices change over a period of time.

I recently asked my collegues to join me for a dinner .Most Fridays we go for a dinner and then head out to houses. RAMADAN around the corner Hyderabad buzzes with the festive colors all around. I don’t know what exactly is ramzan or why is it celebrated. All I know is that this is the season for the world renowned HALEEM (a delicacy made with Wheat, Mutton and other special spices). Recently Hyderbadi Haleem has been conferred the status of a Geographical Indicator status

(For those of you wondering what does a Geographical Indicator stand for , it is a special status granted by the government and a kind of special recognition that this object is now a part of the rich heritage of the concerned locality…ex: Indian Basmati rice, Tirupati Laddu, Champagne.,etc)

Coming back to my tryst with my colleagues to join me for a Haleem eat out, it seemed no one was interested (or rather I should put it as ‘excited’). If they had no mood to come out for dinner I would not have logged such a big post . Indeed we went for dinner on that night but to a different place (in a brand locality).

The whole turnaround of events made me think about the change in our preferences as we grow old.

• We no longer like the Masala Chai in the T- stall on the roadside (I love the masala chai at our campus gate )
• we no longer prefer to go to eat at places such as Cafes (not the CCD’s but the small café that we used to hang for all our gupships in our college days (our hangout was at Hotel Hylite café, near our colony bustop)
• it has been ages that we watched a movie in a cinema hall in our local area (I miss that crowd that we used to be a part of in VIMAL Theatre at our school)
• The tailor who used to stitch clothes for generations has closed his shop next door
• The Local markets see a low turn around on weekdays
• The General Store fellow at the corner of our lane seems to use the products for his family only

I am not here to comment on anyone but I would like to make appoint clear that I would like to relish those moments that I spent in all the above places.

Being Brand/Health/Social conscious certainly helps in our showing how mature we have turned , but it is worth to stay amateur if the experience is to relive our past.

  1. Hola Vamsi!! Good one! When I read something like this, my eyes sparkle for myself, becuz I still get a chance to cherish the tea at the chaiwalas’ at the corner of ma lane!! I still go for footpath shopping and prefer the kiranawala to the shopping malls… I still enjoy dhaba’s food at the highways! Not long ago, I’ve been to a farm house in Suncity and found myself picking up salad vegetables for ma momma!! For me, these are sweet little things that make me feel at ease. I do prefer brands when it comes to hospitals and docs or for a builder for my home. For day to day chores am still stuck on the vintage!! And yes, the last movie I saw was in Gokul theatre :)… And till date, I’ve never booked an online ticket simply becuz am healthy enough to go, stand in the queue for an hour, when that’s saving me 35 bucks!! I never am too busy that an hour of standing in queue would change time-space continuum! And I love myself cuz ma ego never hurts me to do what I wanna!
